Salvation by Langston Hughes

The short story of Salvation is about a young boy in a church full of old people, family members and children most of then the same age of the boy and it revolves about the conflict of the boy not seeing Jesus or anything at all wen finally the boy affirms that he doesn’t believe in Jesus because he didn’t fell anything.

For me as a religious man myself I can see why this boy is thinking like that and why. In many times I have felt the same way but in different circumstances, sometimes I fell alone and scared at the same time due to some problems in my life and I look to Jesus for some answers  but nothing happen or at least I fell nothing happens  not even a single sing of presence from any celestial being. And this leads me to doubt my religious believe that my family has taught me for basically all my life. After reading this story I can relate to the message or in other words the main character, not only he feels afraid and scared of not feeling Jesus but he feels disappointed because he lied to he’s family and to some extent the church (community) and is in this part that I feel more connected to the struggles of the main character because it happens to anyone including me. Personally I had lied many times before and even do I know that lying is bad I do it because I am afraid of the consequences that would lead if I tell the truth so I lied. Is after the lie when I realize the error I just committed and suddenly I feel ashamed and guilty due to my actions just like in the story. But moving aside the religious theme we can still learned from this story how to be a better person and use the main character as a mirror to analyze yourself and discover better ways to improve your decision making and to see you as a person that commits errors all the time that can be forgiven by acts of redemptions by your part. But I have one problem and it’s with the title of this story “Salvation” I don’t know what the author is trying to tell me but using this specific word, all I can understand is that the character is waiting for Jesus and I find that to be a problem you can’t just sit around doing nothing waiting for someone to save you instead you need to get up and work hard to be a good person and save yourself and maybe even others.
